STAGE 5. Defining the action plan

What steps should be completed?

Step 1: Specify intervention actions

INTERVENTIONS TO PREVENT SCHOOL ABSENTEEISM*

Studies in low- and middle-income countries indicate that implementing actions such as providing food to children in schools and giving families financial incentives increases children’s attendance at school (reduces school absenteeism) and improves their linguistic and numerical skills (academic performance). These are important protection factors for children at this age.

The following factors are associated with these interventions functioning well or poorly (lack of effects):

GOOD FUNCTIONING POOR FUNCTIONING
  • Conditioning financial aid on families carrying out specific actions to keep children in the school environment.
  • Merely contributing financial aid to families, with no obligations (this does not reduce children’s school absenteeism per se).
